The Reverend John Dennis Smart, age 84, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2024, in St.Louis. Born on November 2, 1940, in Waco, Texas, to his mother Ruth Stoval Smart and father Noble Carlton Smart. Dennis lived a life of faith, ministry, and curiosity.

He was a proud graduate of San Angelo High School, Baylor University, the University of Texas, and the Virginia Theological Seminary. In 1966, he married Susan Harrell Smart. With her he is father to John Dennis, Jr., who is married to Michele, and has three children — Hannah, Jonathan, and Holly. Also father to Amanda, who is married to Todd Gilliom, and has two children — Mina and Sam.

Dennis spent a lifetime ministering to his local communities. He served Episcopal churches in Texas, Georgia, and later in St. Louis. He was an adventurous traveler, amazing cook, a brilliant photographer, a prolific writer, and a very convincing Santa Claus. He was always delighted to hear, “Hey Santa!” in passing from strangers of all ages. He remained jolly to the very end and looked forward to his next big adventure.
