Richard Lockley

Richard Lockley of Hazelwood, MO passed away on February 4, 2021 at the age of 68 from complications due to cancer. He was born in Uvalde, TX to James & Lois Lockley, the third of four children. His family moved to St Louis in 1968 and Richard graduated from Horton Watkins High School in 1970. He received an associate degree in data processing from Indian Hills Technical College and served in the United States Air Force from 1977 to 1981. He married Lucy (née McKenzie) in 1978 and the couple moved to Spokane, WA while he served at Fairchild Air Force Base. They moved back to St. Louis in 1981 where Richard worked as a computer technician, a teacher, and a programmer.

Richard loved to read, especially literary historical fiction and Classic novels and was fond of old movies like ‘Citizen Kane,’ ‘The Maltese Falcon’ and ‘Zulu’. He also enjoyed contemporary comedies such as ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ and ‘Groundhog Day’ and was a big fan of animated films like Pixar’s ’The Incredibles’ and ‘Finding Nemo.’ Richard enjoyed volunteering at the Friends of St Charles City-County Library annual Book Fair and participating in the yearly St. Charles City-County Library Foundation Trivia Challenge.

In the last few years, much to the delight of the trick-or-treaters in the neighborhood, Richard took great pleasure & pride in crafting his own costumes for Halloween, going out as Dumbledore (from the Harry Potter films), Captain Barbossa (from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean), Colonel Sanders (of KFC fame), and even Santa Claus.

He is survived by his wife Lucy of 42 years, his children Robert and Sarah, and his brothers James N. Lockley III & Walt Lockley. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Julia (Judy).

No memorial service is planned at this time; a celebration of life will be held at a later date when circumstances allow. In lieu of flowers, and in appreciation of the care Richard received there, donations may be made to Siteman Cancer Center at: friendsofsiteman.wustl.edu or by mailing a check to Siteman Cancer Center, Washington University, MSC 1204, 7425 Forsyth Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63105.

    Dear Lucy, Robert and Sarah,

Richard was a great husband and father with a mischievous twinkle in his eye and he will be greatly missed by all. One thing that we always admired about the Lockley family was the fact that they were always such a closely knit group that shared many of the same interests, hobbies and philosophies. They always seemed to genuinely enjoy each other’s company while discussing and exploring their various ideas on books, movies, music, history and especially trivia. Richard enjoyed a long retirement and put up an extremely courageous battle fighting cancer for the last couple of years. RIP Richard.

    Sincerely,

    Julie and Tim Dailey

I’m sorry for your family’s loss, Lucy. Richard was a kind person with a wry sense of humor and he made every gathering more interesting by his presence. Though he was taken from you far too soon, I know he’ll be with you in your heart forever. Take care of yourself.
