Sarah Eastman Kimmey

Sarah Eastman Kimmey

September 23, 1936 – April 19, 2019

Beloved wife of Dr. James R. Kimmey, Jr. for more than 60 years. Devoted mother of Elisabeth Kimmey and James R. Kimmey III (Emily). Grandmother to Jacquelyn, Ryan and Spencer. Loving sister, aunt and friend to all who came her way.

Sarah was born at Mt. Vernon, Ohio to Dr. and Mrs. Robert L. Eastman. She graduated from Denison University in 1958 with a degree in Sociology and Secondary Education. She completed a certificate in Elementary Education from the University of Wisconsin- Madison in 1958.

In the summer of 1957, an unsuspecting young Sarah Eastman was lounging with a friend on a raft on Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin when Jim Kimmey and his compatriot decided it would be a good time tipping that raft over. The rest, as they say, is history. Sarah taught elementary school for five years and was Appointment Secretary to Senator Burch Bayh of Indiana from 1963 to 1966. Over the next five decades, Sarah and Jim lived in Metro Washington; Berkeley, California, where they welcomed Elisabeth in 1967; Staten Island, New York; Madison, Wisconsin, where James was born in 1975; and St. Louis, Missouri, accumulating friends and memories along the way. Sarah volunteered in her children’s schools; Children’s Theater of Madison; St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Madison, Grace Episcopal Church in Kirkwood, and Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis, serving on the Alter Guild at each; St. Louis University Hospital and Auxiliary, Woman’s Club of the St. Louis University School of Medicine; and many community organizations each place she lived.

Sarah was an accomplished home cook, whose pecan pie was nonpareil. She loved entertaining, hosting a Christmas Eve party every year for members of the choir at Christ Church Cathedral. She and Jim tended a wonderful garden in Lafayette Square, which was featured in the Lafayette Square Home and Garden Tour and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Each day, she strove to make the world she walked in a little bit brighter for the people around her. Later in life, she enjoyed nothing more than watching her grandchildren grow.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at 3:00 PM at Christ Church Cathedral, St. Louis, MO, followed by a reception. Ladies attending are encouraged to wear their finest hats in recognition of Sarah’s love for beautiful hats.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Church Cathedral.

As a former high school classmate, Sarah was always fun and interesting to be around. I remember she was shy and slightly nervous at our 35th reunion how classmates would respond to her. We were not disappointed
and I think she enjoyed the reunion. My condolences to the family. I’m sure Sarah
    will be missed.

Sarah attended Church with, and sat close to me on Sundays at Christ Church Cathedral. She was diligent and dignified in keeping up with “everything” that was going on at Church. I will miss her presence and participation at Church.
