Steve Dirnbeck

Steve Dirnbeck passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on May 8th, 2025.

Born in St. Louis on March 31, 1932, to Mary and Stefan Dirnbeck. Steve was well-loved by all who knew him. A former cross country and track star and crowned king of his senior prom at Hadley Technical High School, he graduated (1950) proudly and embarked on a remarkable career as a tool and die maker. Over more than six decades, Steve dedicated his life to his craft, concluding his professional journey with stops at Ehrhardt, Boeing, and Dazar, retiring in 2016.

On May 3, 1952, Steve married the love of his life, Rose Marie Hefti. Their marriage spanned 65 beautiful years filled with love, laughter, and a shared zest for life. Together, they built a wonderful family, after honeymooning on Lake Taneycomo, they moved into their first home on Peck Street in North St. Louis City, then moving to Wall Street in Baden in 1963, and finally settling into the Bellefontaine neighborhood in 1990.

Steve became an active member of the American Turners in 1955, participating in countless bowling and softball tournaments, helping to maintain the hall and camp, and fostering a strong sense of community. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed playing handball, racquetball, softball, horseshoes, golf, and fishing, always holding the Turner motto close to heart, “Sound Mind, Sound Body.” He was also a dedicated observer of all sports, especially when his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were competing.

His legacy lives on beyond his family and community, he leaves behind 23 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren (with more on the way). He is loved by his children Steve (Kay), Tim (Cathy), Debbie (Roger Huelsing), Mike (Susan), Tom (Nancy), Bob (Nancy), Ron (Lisa), and Cathy (Dennis Kazmierowicz), along with his brother Ed (Betty). Along with being Uncle Steve to many nieces, nephews, and ‘chosen’ family. Steve was a generous soul, for his warmth, kindness, and the ability to make everyone feel like family.

Steve is reunited in heaven with his beloved wife Rose Marie, sons James, John, and Bob, and his parents Mary and Stefan. His life was a testament to hard work, faith, and unconditional love. He taught us all how to work diligently, pray sincerely, play wholeheartedly, and love fiercely.

In keeping with his lifelong spirit of generosity, Steve chose to donate his body to Saint Louis University Medical School, continuing his gift of life and learning.
Steve’s legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered for his unwavering love, his endless spirit, and his joyful presence.
