Steven Donald Grimm
May 23, 1954 – September 26, 2026
Steven Donald Grimm, age 72 of Kirkwood, MO, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 26, 2026, in St. Louis, MO.
He was born May 23, 1954, at Hamilton AFB (California) to the late Walter Donald and Shirley May (nee Hough) Grimm, the oldest of their four children.
A proud Class of 1972 graduate from Collinsville High School, Steve discovered his passion for writing early on, serving as both a featured columnist and the editorial editor for the Kahoki newspaper. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Illinois, followed by a Juris Doctor from St. Louis University.
He delighted family and friends with his quick wit and was well known for his ability to turn a phrase. Birthday and Christmas cards were often accompanied by sketches and one-liners that turned them into keepsakes. Steve enjoyed painting landscapes and the occasional family pet, maintaining a quiet hobby that many were surprised to learn. His Halloween costumes were annually anticipated; slight mischief was never far away from Steve.
Steve was also a passionate, lifelong fan of the Cardinals, the Blues, and all things basketball. He particularly loved March Madness, the annual Braggin’ Rights game, and supporting his hometown Kahoks team. His dedication to the sport led him to launch the local Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, which earned a stellar reputation throughout Illinois. This love for the game extended to his personal life, where he and his partner became well known for hosting the annual HoopsFest celebration every NCAA Men’s Final Four Saturday—a highly anticipated tradition that occasionally made the local news.
Surviving him are his beloved wife, Pamela (Vitale) Morris-Grimm of Kirkwood, MO; four children, Nathan (Rebecca) Grimm of Litchfield, IL; Stephanie (Will) Higgins of St. Louis, MO; Dawson Grimm of Kirkwood, MO; and stepson Zachary Morris of Chicago, IL; sisters Michelle Grimm (Frank Scoggins) of St. Louis, MO, Debbie (Tony) Calza of Collinsville, IL, and brother Dan (Sue) Grimm of Wayne, NJ; his in-laws, Joseph and Rosemary Vitale of St. Louis, MO; as well as three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on The Hill (5130 Wilson Ave, St. Louis, MO). Visitation starts at 9:00 am followed by a mass at 10:00 am.
In memory of Steve, memorial donations are suggested to Mercy Hospice – St. Louis de Greeff Hospice House, located at 10024 Kennerly Rd., St. Louis, MO 63128.
