Steven L. Brown
Steven L. Brown, age 73, passed away peacefully in St. Louis, Missouri on Thursday January 9, 2025, following a long illness. He was born in Wichita, Kansas on August 4, 1951 to Charlene A. (Jones) Brown and Robert H. Brown. After some extra fun, extra time, and a brief stint as an ambulance driver, Steve graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. After graduation, he took a job with ASARCO in El Paso, TX where he was recognized for helping develop the Tuyère Silencer, which is now used around the world to increase the efficiency and safety of the production of copper.
He later moved his family to Ironton, Missouri and continued his work with ASARCO at the plant in Glover, MO. When the plant was acquired by Doe Run, Inc., he moved his family once more and became the Plant Manager at the lead smelter in Herculaneum, MO. Early on, he envisioned establishing a river port there, which is now becoming a reality. After retiring, he spent time living in Denver, CO, West Plains, MO, and Rolla, MO before moving near St. Louis in 2021.
Steve had many hobbies. He was a very talented skeet shooter and won many tournaments. While living in Ironton he was known for being an avid golfer and gardener. He was a passionate fan of the University of Kansas Jayhawks and the Denver Broncos. However, his greatest joy was coaching his sons in baseball and cheering them on throughout their athletic and academic careers in high school and college.
He is survived by his sons Kyle (Christine) L. Brown and Keith H. Brown; his grandchildren Ethan, Owen and Aiden Brown; and his sister Kimberly (Thomas) Smagala.
No visitation or service are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, a donation to The American Cancer Society or The American Lung Association in his name would be greatly appreciated.
I’m sorry for your loss. A beautiful written tribute to him.
