Anthony L. “Tony” Calcaterra
Anthony “Tony” Lewis Calcaterra, 87, fortified with the sacraments of Holy Mother Church, passed away after a brief illness on Nov. 22nd, 2016.
Born September 17, 1929 in Herrin, Illinois, son of Paul and Maria (nee Porro), loving and beloved husband of 64 years to Norma (nee Mack); dedicated and cherished father to Michael Calcaterra, Lisa Harper, Clare Wong (Ray) and Mara Calcaterra; proud grandfather to Dr. Andrew Wong; dear and loving uncle to Paul Dean Garavalia (Nancy), Jackie Giles, Nancy Travis (Jim), Paula Gabby (Steve), Rod Calcaterra (Sheryl), Nina Frasier (Steve); dear and loving godfather to Cindy Calcaterra; and dear and loving great uncle. Tony was preceded in death by his sister Angeline Garavalia (nee Calcaterra), brother Frank Calcaterra and cousins Joe Calcaterra and Erma Petroski (nee Calcaterra).
Working his way through the University of Illinois, he earned a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering in 1951. After serving his country as a member of the U.S. Army, he spent most of his professional life employed by the Shell Oil Corporation in Wood River, Illinois, during which time he took a sabbatical to earn a Masters degree from Purdue University in 1965. He was an active member of the Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Rules for the State of Illinois, serving as chairman for a number of years.
Tony will be remembered and missed by the many people who encountered his genuinely warm and kind personality and example set by his strong work ethic, respect and compassion for others and happiness he found in life which he freely shared.
Services will be held Friday December 2, 2016 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 7701 Highway N, Dardenne Prairie, MO 63368. Visitation will begin at 11:00am with a funeral mass at Noon. Interment will be immediately following at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Stray Rescue of St. Louis.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Garden Villas of O’Fallon for their love, friendship, and support of Tony over the past years. As well as the nurses and caregivers at Delmar Gardens Skilled Nursing facility and Progress West Hospital, especially Nurse Linda, for their care and dedication during his concluding days and hours.
