Virginia Ann East

Baptized in the Hope of Christ’s Resurrection, Virginia Ann East [nee Bartosherwitz / Barth] died quietly on February 2, 2024, in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Stephen and Marcella [Bartosherwitz] Barth, her husband, Ervin Franklin East, her sister, Jean Wolken, her brother-in-law, Arthur Weiss, her brother-in-law, Harry M. East and her brother-in-law, Harold R. East.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Hoppe (Ed) and son Jeff East (Mary Jo); her grandchildren, David Vaught, Heather Wingate, Jake Hoppe, Gabby East and Tori East; and her great grandchildren, Colton Wingate, Liam Wingate and Hailey Wingate.

Virginia is also survived by her sister, Marie Weiss, her brother-in-law, John (Jack) Wolken and her sister-in-law, Rita East and her many nieces and nephews; Kathleen Weiss, Arthur (Bud) Weiss, Dan Weiss (Sue), Robert Weiss (Pat), Stephen Wolken (Melanie), Jim Wolken (Barb), Joann Woolfolk (Glenn), Judy Bienvenu (Robert), Terri Dentsbier (Russ), Tracy Heitz (Paul), David East (Ellen) and cousins Sharon Arno (Al) and Patti Arno (Jim); and many other relatives and friends.

Virginia was married to her husband, Ervin Franklin East, for 41 years. Together they raised a son and daughter who were their whole world.

Family was everything to her. She loved playing cards, board games, puzzles, reading books, dying Easter eggs and baking Christmas cookies with her children (nieces and nephews before that) and eventually with her 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

She was an avid book reader, enjoyed watching Jeopardy and spending every afternoon visiting with her sister-in-law, Rita East. They shared books, friendship, a beer (or two) and lots of laughter. Rita was not only her sister-in-law but her dearest and best friend for over 69 years.

You could often find her listening to St. Louis Cardinal baseball games on KMOX radio while enjoying a cold beer or watching football on a Sunday afternoon. She lived life on her terms unapologetically.

Aunt Virginia or “Aunt Gin”, as she was affectionately known by her nieces and nephews, was considered the life of any family gathering and her presence will be greatly missed.

Virginia was passionate about scientific research, and her wish was to have her body donated to St. Louis University’s Gift Body Program as her mother and father had also done.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the near future to allow those who loved her to share stories and honor her memory.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to

American Macular Degeneration Foundation

    Linda,
With love and prayers for your entire family, we remember your sweet mom, and the tremendous love she had for all of you. May it bring you peace to know she now rests in heaven, peaceful and whole, reunited with your dad.

Linda, I was so blessed to have your mom for my aunt! She was loving, smart, sassy and sweet. I have so many good memories of her. She will be met in Heaven by so many people who loved her, too! I know one day you will see her again.
    Love and hugs!
