Memories of William D. “Bill” Voss

Those who knew Bill knew a man whose warmth was immediate and genuine—a man whose smile could light a room, whose arms were always ready for a hug, and whose kind word seemed to arrive exactly when it was needed most.

His love for his family was steady and deep, expressed not only in words but in countless small gestures of care, laughter, and encouragement.

Bill will be remembered for his easygoing spirit and the joy he brought into everyday conversations. Friends recall the way he would wrap them in a welcoming hug, then quickly dive into lively discussions about hockey games and the hottest rock bands from years past – including his own. Music and sports were passions that gave him endless stories, and his enthusiasm was contagious.

Yet Bill was more than a friend with a warm personality—he was also the faithful companion of Francine, his bride and partner in nearly fifty years of dedicated service to the parish community of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church. Many parishioners know Francine as the steady voice on the other end of the phone, the calm presence who restored order whenever a problem arose. She has long been the quiet strength behind the parish’s daily life.

    Behind that strength stood Bill.

He walked beside her through decades of ministry and memory, sharing the long days and late nights, the burdens carried silently, and the crosses borne faithfully. Where Francine steadied countless hearts, Bill steadied hers. Their partnership was not only a marriage—it was a shared vocation of service lived quietly but faithfully within the life of their parish.
Bill also brought joy to the parish in a way that lifted the entire community. At the St. Mary Magdalen School picnics, Bill and his band were often the highlight of the day. Families gathered, children danced, and friendships deepened as his music filled the air. His angelic voice carried across the picnic grounds, drawing smiles from every corner. Those summer evenings became treasured memories, and Bill’s music became part of the parish’s living soundtrack.

Perhaps nowhere was his gift more deeply felt than on Christmas Eve. As candlelight flickered across the stained-glass windows of St. Mary Magdalen and the church settled into reverent stillness, Bill would lift his harmonica and gently play “Silent Night.” The notes floated through the sanctuary like a prayer breathed into the winter air. Then, joined by his dear friend Kieth Balentine, the duet would sing “Mary, You Were There.” Bill’s tender voice blending with Kieth’s deep baritone created a moment the parish came to cherish year after year.

His harmonica did not simply accompany the hymn—it seemed to cradle it. The music softened weary hearts, hushed restless children, and reminded everyone present that the birth of Christ enters the world quietly, tenderly, and full of light. For many parishioners, Christmas Eve will forever echo with the memory of Bill’s song.

Bill’s life, like all faithful lives, was not without hardship. The Voss family has endured profound losses—grief that tested their resolve and sorrow that knocked hard upon their door. Yet through every trial, Bill remained a quiet pillar of strength. He was present, faithful, and enduring. His steady presence reminded those around him that faith is not merely spoken—it is lived.

In the end, Bill’s legacy is found not only in music, memories, or service, but in the love he shared so freely. His life reminds us that the most meaningful lives are often the quiet ones—the ones that lift others up, steady weary hearts, and leave behind melodies of kindness long after the music fades.

And so we remember Bill – with his warm smile, his ready hug, his harmonica gently singing through candlelight, and his voice rising like prayer into the night.

May the love he shared continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew him.

Bill was a great guy. I always enjoyed being in his presence. Whether helping him set up a stage he was about to play on or sitting outside on his deck at his home. He was easy to listen to and was always very kind and funny. Seeing that picture above puts a smile on my heart. I offer my love and condolences to all his friends and family. Heaven welcomed one of the greats!

Have been keeping you all close in my thoughts and prayers. I always loved to hear his band play and the St. Mary Magdalen picnics. So glad to be able to see him play a few years ago at the LaChance winery in DeSoto. He had such courage. Hugs to you all.
