William Duane Schreffler

William (Bill) Duane Schreffler passed away on Sunday, June 2. He was born on August 6, 1941 in Spickard, Missouri to Leo and Iva Schreffler. In his younger years his family moved around a lot, and his family finally settled in Canton, MO. He graduated from Canton High School in 1959 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and made this his career. On September 13, 1960 he married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Kreeger. To this union 3 children were born; Brian Earl, Darryl Wayne and Karyn Rae. Bill retired from the Navy in 1979 and returned to MO where he worked as an electronics repairman, then opened his own shop. He retired from there, and worked at Wal-Mart for a short time before he retired for the last time. Everyone teased him that since he retired 3 times he flunked the “act of retiring”.

Bill was a man who never met a stranger, and would talk everyone’s ear off. He was an avid reader and had a great memory for everything he read. When he had his 2nd heart attack and by-pass surgery in 1994 he ran out of reading material and started reading the Encyclopedia Britanica. He made it through the “M” before he went back to work. He was a fantastic Husband, Dad and Grandpa.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Iva Schreffler, his sister Virginia Bernstein, and his son Brian. He is survived by his wife Joyce of Springfield, MO; his son Darryl and wife Angie of Ozark, MO; His daughter Karyn and husband Allen of Springfield, MO; his sister Ina and her husband Jack of Apache, OK; and his grandchildren Kelli, Alex, Ashley, Owen and Reagan.

On Sunday, June 9, a celebration of Bill’s life will be held at his daughter, Karyn’s home in Springfield starting at noon . Services will be on Monday, June 10th, at 10 a.m. at the pavillion at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in South Springfield with internment to follow.

The family is asking that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the American Heart Association or to the Convoy of Hope and Salvation Army for the Oklahoma tornado victims.

Joyce, So sorry for your loss!! I spoke to Bill over the phone a while back. You may recall? Our grandfather’s John M. & Glen A. Schreffler were brothers. I was so looking forward to meeting Bill and his family some day! Again, our sincere condolences from the Schreffler’s from north Mo.
